Keep All Chips Under Control—With Rotoclear’s New AI Module
With a new AI module for the Rotoclear C Pro, Rotoclear is making it possible for the first time to continuously analyze chip formation. In September 2026, the new solution will make its world premiere at IMTS in Chicago and AMB in Stuttgart.
In machining, chips are much more than just a byproduct. Chip forms and chip nest formation provide important insights into the stability of the process. Long, irregular chip forms or chip clogging in the cutting zone, for example, can endanger the tool and workpiece, damage surfaces, and compromise dimensional accuracy.
Therefore, those who can reliably monitor and analyze chip formation gain valuable insights for optimizing their own machining processes. Until now, it has been impossible to perform a reliable and continuous analysis of chip formation with the human eye.
Finally, we can analyze chip formation!
This is where a new AI module from Rotoclear comes in: Rotoclear ChipDetect AI continuously analyzes chip formation, provides early warnings of critical process conditions, and enables a detailed retrospective analysis of chip formation.
In this way, the new AI module takes process monitoring to the next level: The AI-supported analysis of chip formation provides valuable process information that enables users to identify critical chip formation patterns more quickly, better understand correlations in retrospect, and, based on this, optimize their machining processes in a more targeted manner.
From Research Project to Finished AI Module
The idea for this originated as early as 2024. Since then, researchers at the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools (IFW) at Leibniz University Hannover have been working intensively on AI-based chip detection.
This has now resulted in a market-ready AI module that significantly expands the possibilities of visual process monitoring: ChipDetect AI uses the high-resolution image data from the Rotoclear C Pro for the automated detection and analysis of chip formation. This finally turns chip formation into a process signal that can be continuously evaluated.
World Premiere at IMTS and AMB
This September is the big moment: We’re excited to present the new AI module live for the first time — on two continents simultaneously.
